The benefits of training in Kung Fu for kids

Be the trainer of your child through an online Kung Fu course

Martial arts can bring both the body (read 10 things that change for 6DKF’s practitioners (physical)) and the mind (read 12 Things That change for 6DKF’s practitioners (mental)) incredible benefits that are out of the reach of any other recreation activity.

Note – This article has been asked by one of our Core Course practitioners on Patreon (see how to attend our home study classes here Learn Kung Fu online: a beginner-to-expert course).

These benefits are within the reach of people of all ages (read The right age to start practice) but in this article, we will explore why, how and when, learning Kung Fu, can positively and deeply impact the positive development of a kid.

1. Physical benefits

Correct Kung Fu training represents the best possible full-body workout because it forces the use of most muscle groups in very different ways; the consequences of this so complete and complex activation are incredible improvements in terms of:

  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Health
  • Growth

A note by Master Kongling – In Kung Fu, agility, speed, power, proprioception, spatial intelligence and much more are developed consistently to reach practical results (read All the skills of 6 Dragons Kung Fu). The students learn to dose strength and speed with the utmost precision so that they never use more (or less) energy than they need.

2. Mental benefits

A Kung Fu path not only offers advantages for the body but also for the mind. The absolutely not usual level of discipline and focus required drastically helps to improve:

  • Lasting concentration
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Self-awareness
  • Self-discipline
  • Self-esteem
  • Self-control
  • Self-confidence
  • Respect (towards themselves and others)
  • Positive attitude
  • Strong character

A note by Master Kongling – The point is that a well-planned course is full of big / small goals to reach and all of them are perfectly proportioned to the skill level of the practitioner. The teacher set the objective and the kid works towards achieving it (automatically learning the practical, real value of hard work and perseverance).

3. Social benefits

Martial arts can also work functionally in social terms:

  • Practicing a child gradually realizes that shortcuts lead to a short distance while the longer and harder (reasoned) paths open the door to stable and lasting success
  • An online Kung Fu course can also be a great outlet for kids to relieve stress and channel their negative energies in a positive way; in many cases, this means staying away from bad company, drugs, alcohol (etc.)
  • Kung Fu is an activity that kids can practice for their entire lives, providing them with a lifelong healthy and safe activity (an endless source of physical and mental well-being)
  • A Kung Fu course is also a fun and engaging activity; it can keep them active and provide a break from screen time and all those sedentary activities that afflict our society
  • Last but not least, self-defense; even if at a basic level, even a kid can learn to not automatically be a victim; we are not saying that this is about forcing anyone to react violently against dangerous people (this would be counterproductive) but simply to prevent and limit the incidence of those kind of scenarios; to fight is always the last resource for an adult and 10 times more for a child (read Best martial arts for self-defense)

4. Other benefits

At a personal level, shared Kung Fu training:

  • Allows a parent to share such an experience with his / her kids that they will never forget
  • Offers the solution to create a bond based on respect between parent and child; this way one can educate without being either severe or violent; no punishments but rather “playful penance” (such as push-ups, squats, etc.) on which is also possible to joke and reason
  • Is not a game, nor a religion, it is not only “martial” but also “art”; this means that in addition to the physical, mental and social benefits, such a course can also provide a gradual mental elevation (which can translate into other areas of life)

Final notes

A few conclusive considerations:

  • The duty of a parent that is helping his / her child to learn Kung Fu is to tailor the practice to the individual to his / her needs and abilities (read How to teach Kung Fu to my children); this way, kids of all fitness levels can participate and see real and constant progress
  • It is important to stress that (real) Kung Fu offers a sense of deep accomplishment and the reason is that it positively impacts almost every aspect of human life

A note by Master Kongling – In a so short space it is incredibly difficult to list all the positive aspects of a serious Kung Fu course but we hope to have made at least a general idea.
