How to train professionally in martial arts

How to train effectively

Let’s start from one fact: the best way to train seriously is not to follow the classic gym courses.

In every kind of martial or sports activity, to reach as fast as possible a good level we should:

  • Find a good instructor that directly follows us – Find something like a personal coach (this is the most effective choice but it is very expensive)
  • Train by ourselves – Study from A to Z everything we need to know (this solution is slow, long and not so effective but cheap)
  • Combine the two things – Being in part followed by a coach and in part train by ourselves (this is the best choice, in terms of quality and costs)

In no cases, it is possible to obtain a professional quality training subscribing to a course open to everyone and the reason is very simple, the amateur courses (as it is natural) are made to:

  • Limit the effort – Maintain efforts and workout time under an acceptable (commercial) range
  • Be accessible – Be accessible to people of all kind (young, old, not athletic, with various commitments, with work activities, etc.)
  • Be open – Annex new members at any time along the route (slowing / blocking the growth of those who arrived earlier)
  • Do not be selective – We can find ourselves to train with companions that limit the quality of our preparation (seriousness, intensity, focus, etc.)

A note by Master Kongling – Anyone who has already attended a few gym classes knows exactly what we are talking about. Those with a professional mindset (which does not necessarily mean wanting to work with martial arts or competing), find themselves like a fish out of water among amateurs. This kind of frustration has happened to me too many times (do not sweat, never go deep into technical details, cool down during training, etc.).

Let’s be clear, these courses are not completely useless if:

In all the other cases this choice can turn into a ballast which we will only notice when it will be too late (read /// Subscribe (it's free!) or Login to see this content ///).

How to choose our martial path

In 6 Dragons Kung Fu (read How to start practicing 6DKF), we continuously exalt the formative value of errors (read Measure ourselves with errors) but not all errors are the same; some of these, if carried out too far in the years (read The right age to start practice), can represent an unsurpassable rock, a dead end from which it is difficult to get out. We must seriously think about what we want to do and analyze whether, with the path we have chosen, there is the possibility of reaching our goal (read How to achieve our goals in life and in martial arts), trying to understand if:

If we are not kids, if we are not at our first experience, if we are searching for something better and we are sure that we can sustain it, we must avoid at all costs to force us to keep too low standards (read Intensity of training: depends on what?) in terms of:

  • Effort (pace, times, workloads, type of exercises, functionality, waste of times, etc.)
  • Technical levels (the cure for details, practical application, the general martial culture of the instructor, etc.)
  • Continuity (the number of weekly training sessions and real continuity of the path, a course that closes after a year does nothing but harm us)
