Advanced concepts: the Persistent Movements

What are the Persistent Movements?

Persistent Movements cannot be directly acquired.

A good practitioner of 6 Dragons Kung Fu, after years of daily practice, comes to acquire the ability of “Persistent Movements”. This specific attitude includes within itself various capacities (that, with time, are activated in combination and automatically):

  • States exchange – Abruptly and instinctively stiffen / soften the body to the needs (read 6DKF’s interactions: from the strong blow to the light touch)
  • Dynamic power control – Continue / divert / reverse / transform or stop a movement already in progress (to reach a moving target, to avoid a danger, etc.)
  • Spatial intelligence and memory – To perceive with the senses (connected with our reason) what is around us and react accordingly (read The most important skill in combat)
  • Quick reasoning – Figure out instantly if a given movement / collision (already in execution) can harm us (how much) and react consequentially
  • Dynamic balance – To always maintain a perfect balance in favor of the active / passive evolutions of the fight (following and / or dominating its flow)

These prerogatives are the result of a constant and varied training, characterized by practices that teach us to manage:

  • The conditioning of our body (resist hitting, resist being struck, etc.)
  • Strength, softness, fluidity and deception (ours, of opponents, of weapons, etc.)
  • Various kinds of obstacles (different for density, weight, elasticity, unpredictability, etc.)
  • Dynamic movements and unusual scenarios (moving targets, natural criticality, etc.)
  • Different fighting situations (realistic scenarios, extreme disadvantage, etc.)
  • Sensory limiting conditions (no light, with disturbing noises, etc.)
  • Weapons and special tools training (nunchaku, wooden dummy, hydra dummy, etc.)
  • Different speed of movement (active, passive, suffered, from external objects, etc.)

In essence, in their ideal expression, Persistent Movements allow us to conveniently transform our body in a material partially or completely:

  • Rigid, fluid or liquid
  • Active or passive
  • Rational or irrational (in the eyes of opponents)

Persistent Movements and excellence in combat

It is important to stress that the abilities we have listed are to be defined in terms of “trend”; it would be unintelligent to imagine a practitioner so skilled to be able to control his opponents at such a level (it happens only in martial arts movies or against extremely low-level practitioners).

Persistent Movements can be said acquired when these kinds of attitude occur frequently (and under sustained rhythm conditions) in the basic technical training of 6DKF (see How to train in 6DKF: specific exercises).

For those who are not even remotely close to these concepts, it is rather difficult to understand their meaning, it is for this reason that, in the next articles, we will see:

  • Some practical examples
  • The (arduous) path to acquire them
