Dodge attacks

In a combat against an opponent who is really able to fight (or that is at our level) it is not reasonable to expect to be able to effectively intercept any attack (parry, channel, etc.).

The attacks (kicks, punches, etc.), when they are brought by opponents with some experience arrive:

  • In the direction of our sensitive points (pain points, etc.)
  • With great power (the intent is to do the maximum possible damage)
  • At high-speed (with a return on guard just as quickly)
  • Accompanied by any types of feints and combinations
  • In control or semi-control situations, submission or semi-submission
  • At short distances (with rapid advances and retreats)

To fight in a real situation we must necessarily learn to:

  • Dodge the shots of the opponents
  • Withstand limiting damages (more about this later)

To learn to dodge (especially the fists) we need a lot of exercise and perseverance; we must develop:

  • Instinct through experience (eg. to guess at the limb more imminently dangerous before it begins to move)
  • Speed and explosive power (eg. instantly reach the safe place that is nearest to the attack and that allows us to fight back)
  • Reflexes (eg. the ability to react instantly and consistently to an opponent attack)
  • Quick reasoning (eg. to understand when an opposing movement becomes an attack and can no longer be a fake)
  • Flexibility / elasticity and balance (eg. our body must be able to assume uncomfortable poses without losing not only stability but also the pace of the fight)

To dodge attacks is very difficult but in future articles we will see some exercises and ways of interpreting the opponent’s intents.
